The upcoming solo exhibition Savage System by Edyta Hul at Volery Gallery plunges into the fluid, recursive entanglements of organic abstraction. Her work suggests an alternative realm—an autonomous system where anthropocentric hierarchies dissolve, leaving behind a world governed by its own primal forces.
Winner of the Grand Prix at the 46th Painting Biennale Bielska Jesień 2023, Edyta Hul is a visual artist based in Warsaw, her practice subverts traditional landscape representation. Historically, landscape painting often served as a decorative backdrop for human narratives; in contrast, Hul brings what is conventionally overlooked—elemental forms, shifting ecosystems, and raw materiality—to the forefront. Her paintings reject binary oppositions of culture and nature, offering instead an unfolding field of organic proliferation, independent of human intervention.
Through a distinct combination of artistic oil paints and industrial enamels, Hul’s works achieve a unique visual tension—ultrasmooth, reflective surfaces where depth and transparency intermingle. Her artistic process is an intuitive, high-intensity act: each painting is executed in a single, focused session, preceded by a meticulous multi-day preparation of the canvas. The result is a composition that appears deceptively simple at first glance, yet gradually reveals its complexity—gestural marks that hover between weightlessness and density, capturing the fleeting essence of movement.
Savage System constructs a world where everything is irrevocably entwined. Hul’s surfaces, woven with gestural strokes and interlaced forms, conjure an ecosystem in perpetual transformation. Nourishment, fertilization, decay, and renewal emerge as rhythmic undercurrents within these compositions. There are no rigid boundaries, only fluid transitions—matter in a constant state of becoming.
Her paintings gesture toward biological structures without defining them. Traces of reptilian textures, avian plumes, membranous skins, and embryonic formations emerge yet evade classification. Shimmering enamel accents suggest the slick sheen of amphibious bodies, the wet gloss of foliage, or light refracting across aquatic surfaces. These elements pulse and shift, resisting static interpretation and instead offering a speculative ecosystem—a living, breathing topography untethered from human narratives.
The absence of a fixed perspective immerses the viewer in a vast, evolving terrain. Hul’s vision is not a reflection of nature but an abstract field of raw matter, instinct, and transformation—a system without hierarchy, where dissolution and renewal exist in constant dialogue. Through Savage System, she invites us to step beyond the familiar, into a realm where life unfolds on its own relentless terms—untamed, autonomous, and unbound by human perception.
