BIOGRAPHY
Interested in both high and low brow culture, painter Sally Kindberg plays on the tragicomic notion of a society that is both civilised and ridiculous. Her paintings' approach to figuration and abstraction reflects her interest in the contrast between flatness and the illusion of three-dimensionality. Kindberg's humorous approach acts as a portal that enables the viewer to explore other, more unsavoury emotions.
Kindberg’s work has been exhibited in several solo exhibitions, including SOFT BITE, 12 Star Gallery, London (2018); Mugshots, Sally Kindberg + Philadelphia PD, Peter von Kant, London (2014) and Hilarious and Hideous, The Hospital Club, London (2008). Her work has also been featured in numerous group exhibitions, such as Arcadia, Peter Von Kant, London (2020); Bull in a China Shop, Tchotchke Gallery, New York (2020); Melancolympics, The Wunderwall, Antwerp, Belgium (2020); London Now 2020, Space K, Seoul, South Korea (2020); House of Togetherness, Harlesden High Street, London (2020); The World Without Us, APT Gallery, London (2019); /'Meikup/, MOCA, London (2019); Not Dream of Islands, Palfrey Gallery, London (2018); XIX Cerveira International Art Biennial, Cerveira, Portugal (2017) and Nature Morte Contemporary Artists Reinvigorate the Still Life, The Four Domes Pavilion, Branch of the National Museum in Wroclaw, Poland (2017).
She has been awarded John Moores Painting Prize 2020, Liverpool, UK (2021) and Twenty painters with a great future, Jerwood Contemporary Painters Prize, London (2008). In 2007, Kindberg received her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and Contemporary Critical Theory from Goldsmiths, London and in 2012, she received a degree in Master of Fine Arts from the same university. Born in 1970 in Stockholm, she currently lives and works in London.
