BIOGRAPHY
Zhang Ji creates mesmerizing paintings using a custom-made industrial syringe to apply paint. He references motifs from religious architecture from mosques, synagogue and cathedral in Europe and the Middle East, creating patterns replicated across the canvas. He takes refuge from the pressure of the high-speed life in his art. The paint required to make these artworks is immense, and labour is demanding. Through his work, Zhang Ji invites the viewer to rethink the medium's possibilities and reinterpret the past.
His work has been exhibited in various solo and group exhibitions, including Art Basel Hong Kong, Van de Weghe, Hong Kong (2017); Fiac, Van de Weghe, Paris (2017); Asia Now Art Fair, Fabien Fryns Fine Art, Paris (2017); Between Friends, Boers Li Gallery, Beijing (2017); The Skin of Truth, Fabien Fryns Fine Art, The Chapel, Marbella (2017); Art Basel Miami, Van de Weghe, Miami (2016); Asia Now Art Fair, Fabien Fryns Fine Art, Paris (2016); The Skin of Truth, Fabien Fryns Fine Art, Temple, Beijing (2016); Gradually, Parkview Green Gallery, Beijing (2014); John Moores Exhibition, Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute, Shanghai (2012); Peace, Art Base 1, Beijing (2009); One Square Meter, Songzhuang, Beijing (2009) and Objects beyond Heart, Exhibition Hall of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing (2007).
