BIOGRAPHY

Seulgi Kim (b. 1990) is a South Korean artist who completed her formal training in Fine Art at Baekseok University in 2014. While she resides in Seoul, her current work is created in the serene setting of her grandmother’s house by the sea, located in the countryside.

Kim’s paintings often depict characters on the cusp between childhood and adulthood, capturing boys and girls navigating the growing pains of becoming individuals. Her work delicately explores these moments of quiet resilience and emotional introspection as they find their place in adulthood.

Drawing inspiration from the simplicity of everyday life, Kim evokes memories from her own childhood, incorporating familiar objects such as lotus leaves, trees, backpacks, and penpals into her paintings. Cats, a source of joy for the artist, also frequently appear, offering a whimsical touch to her reflective compositions.

In her recent works, the color blue dominates the canvas—a symbol of bruises, melancholy, and rough encounters. Yet, within this blue, Kim introduces a warm, radiant light that suggests hope and healing. Her brushstrokes are distinctly delicate, yet textured, providing a tactile depth to her emotive scenes.

Kim has exhibited internationally, with shows in New York, Miami, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Marseille, and Seoul. “Ride the Wave” marks her first solo exhibition in the Middle East, on view at Volery Gallery from October 12 to November 8, 2024.
