BIOGRAPHY
In his artwork, Souffrant draws inspiration from African American masters like Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as European painters such as Botticelli, Van Gogh, and Picasso. Having experienced significant events like the 2004 coup d’état and the 2010 earthquake, Souffrant, with his Haitian background and limited resources, utilizes everyday materials like magazines, online publications, computers, and mobile phones in his paintings.
Employing digital techniques, Souffrant utilizes Photoshop to execute the collage method, meticulously cutting and pasting images sourced from magazines or the internet. These digital compositions are then printed on canvas or aluminum panels, serving as the foundation for acrylic and oil paint application. Through this process, Souffrant explores concepts like society's inundation with instant images and their appropriation, delving into emotional and physical depths through the interplay of paint and imagery derived from social media.
Olivier Jean-Daniel Souffrant pursued his education at the University of Illinois, Chicago, IL. His solo exhibitions have been hosted by galleries such as Zidoun-Bossuyt in Dubai, UAE, Stems Gallery in Paris and Brussels, The Carr Center in Detroit, MI, and Kravets Wehby Gallery in New York, NY. His work has also been featured in group exhibitions at esteemed venues like The Hole Gallery and Room57 Gallery in New York, NY, and Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, SA, as well as institutions such as The Carr Center in Detroit, MI, and the Harvey Museum in Talladega, AL.
