Mariana Oushiro

BIOGRAPHY

Mariana Oushiro is a Brazilian artist based in New York. She earned her B.F.A. from Faculdade Santa Marcelina in São Paulo before moving to New York in 2015 to study at the Art Students League of New York.

Oushiro is known for her distinctive approach to abstraction, blending bold strokes of color, sharp lines, and geometric forms. Drawing inspiration from her Brazilian and Japanese heritage, her compositions balance precision and depth, creating a dynamic exploration of dimensionality and harmony.

Her creative process is deeply physical and intuitive; she often lays her canvas on the ground, stepping and kneeling onto it, and sometimes using her hands instead of brushes. This tactile approach allows her to connect intimately with her work, following the natural geometry she perceives. 

Oushiro finds that the energy and movement of New York City vitalize her creativity, influencing the rhythm and motion evident in her paintings. 

Exhibition History:

“Supernova” (March 26 – May 7, 2022): Oushiro’s first solo exhibition in New York, held at Vito Schnabel Gallery, showcased large-scale paintings and works on paper that confronted viewers with explosive, wild compositions.

“The Postcard” (February 16 – April 8, 2023): Her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, presented at the Old Santa Monica Post Office by Vito Schnabel Gallery, featured new paintings and works on paper inspired by vintage postcards and the architecture of the historic post office.

“Women in Abstraction” (March 20 – 25, 2023): Participated in a group exhibition in Hong Kong, bringing together 15 female artists, each offering their own interpretation of abstraction. 

“The World is Wholly Inside, and I am Wholly Outside Myself” (September 8 – November 4, 2023): Presented at Galerie Mitterrand in Paris, this exhibition showcased Oushiro’s work alongside other artists, exploring diverse approaches to painting.

Solo Exhibition at the Museum of Brazilian Art (MAB) (2023): Oushiro held her first institutional solo exhibition at MAB in São Paulo, Brazil.

Upcoming Exhibition at Volery Gallery (March 7, 2025): Oushiro’s work is scheduled to be exhibited at Volery Gallery in Dubai.
