KYUNGMIN LEE

b. 1990, Paju, South Korea

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1990, Kyungmin Lee was raised within a Buddhist temple in Paju, South Korea. This sanctuary provided me with an ethereal approach to exploring death and all its sublime mysteries. Now, working from my studio based in Queens, New York, I have cultivated an art practice that uses reflective oil-based mediums and resin to convey a sense of flux between the viewer and the blue hues emanating from the canvas.

She obtained a BFA in Fine Art from the Art Institute of Chicago (2016), an MFA from SUNY at Purchase College in New York (2022), and have continued to exhibit my work internationally, predominantly within the USA and South Korea.

In South Korea Kyungmin Lee had the following solo shows; Boundaryless, Mansion9, Seoul (2021), Live in the Moment, Gallery della Vita, Incheon (2018), and A Place to Return, Gallery 247, Seoul (2017).

Her work has been selected for a variety of group exhibitions including; Twentysomethings, Orlando Museum of Art (2023), Ripe, Harper’s Los Angeles (2023), The Midnight Hour, The Hole, New York (2023), No Sign for Land, PS122 Gallery, New York and Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery, White Plains (2022), Upon Reality, Art Space Grove, Seoul, South Korea (2021), Keep Me Company, Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery, White Plains (2020), Creature Such As We, Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery, White Plains (2019), New Car Smell, Purchase College, White Plains (2019), Hyundai department store Art Fair, Daegu, South Korea (2017), and BFA show at the Sullivan Gallery, Chicago (2016).

Over the last decade she have been the recipient of various awards including the Windgate A+D Scholarship, Purchase College, White Plains (2020), The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, Wonjuksa, Garfield (2019), Merit Scholarship SAIC, Chicago (2015), School of the Art Institute of Chicago Grant (2015), Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship, Jackson (2015), Mr/Mrs Charles Shaw Scholarship, Chicago (2015), and the Joseph William Baron Art Scholarship, Dallas (2012).
