BIOGRAPHY

Jae Hyun Lee expresses “cynical realism” through figuration and abstraction, translating inner states. 

His artistic practice and process are inspired by his childhood memories spent in a small and pretty moon village. People with colourfully coloured faces, animals, and objects interpreted in a paranoid and straightforward manner, coexist and express themselves as the artist and someone else. He emphasises texture and layers, while the painting frame, completed by welded and painted on metal, is also a part of his artworks. 

His work has been exhibited in solo exihibitions, including THIS LIFE, Gallery Belle Vie, Seoul (2022) and SELF, Public Gallery + Lento ma forte, Seoul (2021). Lee's work was also featured in group exhibitions, such as The Collection Art Fair & Exhibition, The Hyundai Seoul (2022); Special exhibition, Chakan Gallery, Seoul (2022); Home, Wellperion, Seoul (2021); Korea Art Exhibition, Kintex Ilsan, Seoul (2018); Busan Art Exhibition, Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, Busan, South Korea (2018); Korea Figure Sculpture Competition, Gallery Artsapce H, Seoul (2016) and Korea Art Exhibition, Cheonan Arts Center, Cheonan, South Korea (2016).

He has received several awards, such as 37th Korea Art Exhibition, Seoul (2018); 44th Busan Art Exhibition, Busan (2018); 26th Korea Figure Sculpture Competition, Seoul (2016); 35th Korea Art Exhibition, Seoul (2016) and 42th Busan Art Exhibition, Busan (2016).

Lee received a degree in Architecture from Young Dong University, Gangneung (2002).
