BIOGRAPHY
Born to a Madagascan father and French mother, Alexis Ralaivao's mixed ethnicity is the centre of his practice as a painter. Initially, Ralaivao studied languages and communication with no institutional training in art. Over the years, his interest in painting and art grew fonder, and he was inspired to start painting by art masters such as John Currin, Gerard van Honthorst and Rembrandt. Ralaivao's work captures moments in time that are imbued with intimacy and delicacy.
Ralaivao’s work has been featured in several solo exhibition, including There’s never any excuses not to do anything, ATM Gallery, New York (2020); Mino présente: Alexis Ralaivao, Galerie L’Aléatoire, Paris (2020); Basanés, portraits de français, Rennes Opera house, Rennes (2018) and Basanés, portraits de français, CRIJ de Bretagne, Rennes (2017). His work was also featured in group exhibitions, such as Life Still, Lifestill.org (2020); Les jeunes ont les Rennes, Hotel de Ville de Rennes, Rennes (2018) and Urbaines, Antipode, Rennes (2018).
